Friday Night Lights

Creative Writing fair entry, English project

“Suit up!” says the director, facing his band
The scoreboard clock reads 4::00
The cheerleaders scatter, it’s their turn to rest
From urging the team to score.
Numb’ring a hundred, they clear the stands
All glamoured in red, white, and blue
Out on the track, they form a crowd
To watch what Visitor can do.
Focused and listening, they intently watch
Catching what’s right and what’s wrong
Nervousness fills the stomach of Home
As Visitor ends their last song.
In perfect formation, the band is set
Waiting for their cue to begin
One long whistle lets the drumline know
With a cadence, to march the band in.
Another whistle, heads are down
Parade Rest is the command
Four short tweets, at Attention now
Ready to win is the band.
With a blast they start the show
Marching and playing in beat
Home is winning the halftime show
Visitor can feel their defeat.
Three songs later, the band is done
Quietly, they march off the field
Smiling and proud, they know too well
Home’s best has been revealed.
Third quarter starts and the kids all run
To the food stand for a snack
They’re done for the night and played a good show
Next Friday night, they’ll be back.
